2017 Clipper Cup Notice of Race

The 2017 Clipper Cup will start Friday August 11th 2017. Course will be from Muskegon Michigan to Port Washington Wisconsin. The Organizing Authority will be the Muskegon Yacht Club Clipper Cup Committee and the Port Washington Yacht Club.

1 Rules

The race will be governed by the rules as defined in the Racing Rules of Sailing.

2 Advertising

Will be restricted to Category A

3 Entry

Participation will be split into four divisions:

Spinnaker Division -            Competing for Clipper Cup and JC Rillema Trophy

Jib and Main Division -        Competing for Bert Smith Trophy.

Cruising Division -               Competing for Division Flag and Trophy.

Multihull Division -                Competing for Division Flag and Trophy.

4 Registration and Fees

Yachts must submit:


A. Completed entry form.

B. Current certificate of insurance with a minimum $300,000 liability coverage. 

C. Entry Fee is $110.00.

D. Yachts competing in the Spinnaker or Main and Jib divisions must submit a valid PHRF Certificate. 

E.  Cruising division is available for boats without a PHRF certificate.

F. Competitors must also register at MYC. Registration must be completed by 8.00 PM  8/10/17. Entered yachts that do not register at MYC will be scored DNS and fees will not be refunded.

5 Course

The course will be from Muskegon to Port Washington.


6 Protests

Protests must be submitted in writing to the Clipper Cup Committee not more than two hours after finishing.

7 Decisions of the Jury

Decisions of the Jury are final. Any determination made after the presentation of the awards will have no effect on those awards. 

8 Prizes

Following the race awards will be presented to the overall winner and to the yachts finishing first, second, third, and fourth in each division, subject to the number of boats in each division. Additional awards will be presented to first to finish, Mid spinnaker fleet, last to finish, as well as the awards mentioned in NOR 3.

9 Disclaimer of Liability

Competitors participate in the Lake Michigan Clipper Cup entirely at their own risk (see RRS rule 4, Decision to race). The Organizing Authority will not accept any liability for material damage or personal injury or death sustained in conjunction with or prior to, during  or after the regatta.


10 Cruising Division Instructions

The race committee will assign PHRF ratings to the Cruising Division.  Acceptance into the Cruising Division will be at the discretion of the Race Committee.  There must be at least 3 entrants in the Cruising Division to have a class.  All safety requirements must be met.   A cruising asymmetric spinnaker (gennaker) may be used but no whisker or spinnaker pole may be used to support the cruising spinnaker.  A spinnaker pole or whisker pole may be used to wing out jibs but is restricted in length to the "J" dimension. 

11 Registration and Skippers Meeting

It is recommended that the Skipper or a representative attend the Competitors Meeting Thursday, August 10, 2017 at 8:00 PM at Muskegon Yacht Club.
